About Tim Maxwell - Photographer & Artist
Hi, I’m Tim — a Colorado landscape photographer (and recovering web designer), introverted YouTuber, and nerdy entrepreneur who’s just trying to figure it all out as I go.
This site is the home of my fine art landscape photography business — a place to share my favorite images from the road, offer museum-quality prints, and document the (sometimes bumpy) journey of building a creative business from scratch.

From Code to Cameras
For most of my adult life, I’ve worked in tech as a web designer. Most recently, I've spent the last 10 years or so building themes for the Shopify platform, and helping others build online stores and brands. It’s something I still do, and honestly, it’s a big part of what gave me the skills and confidence to build this business and brand of my own.
I didn’t grow up dreaming of being a professional photographer. This all started with a totally different goal: launching a YouTube channel about cruise travel. I bought a Sony A7R V — which, in hindsight, was wildly overkill for what I needed — and started documenting my trips.
The channel (called Tim at Sea) has done okay — nothing groundbreaking or viral, but decent enough. I’ve come to learn that being an introverted, soft-spoken guy who’s not totally comfortable filming in public probably wasn’t the perfect recipe for vlogging success. That said, I stuck with it — and during those trips, I started getting more curious about still photography.
The Workshop That Changed Everything
Eventually, I realized I was booking shore excursions on these cruises not just to explore — but to photograph. Less “shopping in town,” more “let’s see what this coastline looks like at golden hour.”
That mindset shift is what led me to sign up for a landscape photography workshop in Leavenworth, Washington with Aaron Reed — a photographer I’ve admired for years (and from whom I’d already purchased prints).
Truthfully, I almost backed out. The hotel was expensive. I didn’t know if I should leave my kids for a week. Funds were tight. I wasn’t sure if I’d even enjoy it. But I went.
And it kicked my butt.
Photography, it turns out, is not exactly as relaxing as I envisioned. It’s early mornings, late nights, constant lens swaps, dust spots, sideways rain, cold hands, tired legs, and a constant reminder that Mother Nature is in charge — not you.
But it was also incredible. I felt connected to the world in a new way. And when I got home and looked at the shots — hey, some of them were actually pretty good.
That’s when I started thinking… maybe I could turn this into something.
Slowly Going All In
Since then, I’ve been quietly (okay, obsessively) building my skills. I dove headfirst into YouTube tutorials on editing and composition, researched gear until I couldn’t see straight, and started planning travel not just for the views — but for the photographs.
Trips to Kauai, San Francisco, Norway, Rocky Mountain National Park, Telluride, New York, and New England have all helped shape my growing portfolio. I’ve learned a lot. Still learning.
Also — and maybe some of you can relate — I developed a serious case of gear acquisition syndrome. I’ve bought and sold more equipment than I care to admit, but I’ve finally landed on my dream setup: the Hasselblad X2D II with 20–35mm, 55mm, and 135mm lenses, paired with Kase Wolverine magnetic filters and a few dozen other gadgets that only photo nerds truly appreciate.
(A gear diary blog/video is coming soon for those interested. It’ll be way too detailed, you’ve been warned.)

Where This Is Going
I don’t have all the answers, and I’m not pretending to be an expert. I’m just a guy who loves nature, photography, and storytelling — and I’m trying to build something real.
As part of that, I’ve launched a new YouTube channel where (together with my blog) I’ll be sharing behind-the-scenes content, thoughts on gear, photography trip recaps, and honest reflections on what it’s like to try and make a living selling your art. If that sounds interesting, I’d love for you to subscribe here.
